On October 26, a large-scale rally was held at Place de la République, bringing together citizens, environmental associations and members of the Tunisian diaspora with the same objective: to support the protest movement born in Gabès against the region's air pollution. Through speeches, banners and chants, participants expressed their concerns about industrial discharges that threaten public health, local biodiversity and the livelihoods of the people of Gabès. The rally provided an opportunity to voice the demands made by Gabesian activists: an immediate halt to pollution and the dismantling of Groupe Chimique Tunisien (GCT) units.
Protesters recalled recent episodes of gas poisoning attributed to Groupe Chimique Tunisien, the effects of which have worsened since September 9, 2025: more than 180 people hospitalized in less than a month, many of them teenagers with severe symptoms such as dizziness, breathing difficulties and paralysis. On October 10, ten new cases of intoxication were reported, following on from the hundred or so cases recorded in September, heightening the anger of local residents and environmental activists.
The speech also touched on the response of the Tunisian authorities: the deployment of the army on site to secure the industrial site, and the regional strike called by the UGTT trade union center.
The CRLDHT stresses the need for international solidarity to step up pressure on the authorities concerned and ensure that the court ruling against Groupe Chimique is enforced. The association will issue a call for the creation of a permanent support network, capable of rapidly mobilizing the resources and voices needed to ensure that the fight against pollution in Gabès does not remain isolated, but becomes a shared issue within the international community.
