Building the rule of law in Syria

After crushing Syrians' breasts, paralyzing their breath and stifling their freedom for over fifty years, the odious Baath regime has fallen in Syria. Bashar al-Assad and his family fled without even informing his close collaborators, even those who were his executioners and his terrifying tools for hunting down, imprisoning, torturing, killing and displacing hundreds of thousands of opponents of all stripes and orientations. The world discovered the horrific conditions of Saydnaya prison, its dark rooms and morbid cells, and heard horrific accounts of detention conditions, torture and deliberate murder.

The world discovered the horrific conditions of Saydnaya prison, its dark rooms and morbid cells, and heard horrific accounts of detention conditions, torture and deliberate murder.

While sharing the joy of the Syrian people for the fall of the tyrant and the restoration of freedom, we call on all Syrian political and civil forces to

- Reject extremism, violence and everything that stands in the way of building a free, democratic and just Syria, for which generations of Syrians have sacrificed their lives.

- Solidarity, coexistence and learning from the setbacks of the Arab uprisings to ensure a phase of peaceful transition that paves the way for free, transparent and democratic elections guaranteeing the peaceful alternation of power;

- To ensure the unity of Syria and to reject any discrimination between Syrians on the basis of religion, community, ethnicity or gender, so that Syria can overcome the ordeal of division, fragmentation and conflict it has suffered for decades;

- Create the conditions for the voluntary return of all Syrian refugees who have been forced to leave the country, in coordination with international human rights organizations and humanitarian agencies;

- Begin to put in place an effective transitional justice system that complies with humanitarian standards, guarantees the rights of victims, re-establishes the rule of law and achieves national reconciliation for all;

While strongly condemning the repeated Israeli violations and aggressions against Syrian territory, we call on all peace-loving and justice-loving forces in the world and all international humanitarian organizations to help Syria and its people restore its unity, confront the Israeli occupation, recover its territories and preserve its security, stability and border integrity from any foreign interference that would threaten its stability and territorial integrity.
